This summer, Spin Society DJs brought their energy, gear, and passion for the craft to a series of DJ workshops hosted by the St. Louis County Library system. Led by DJ Chris Brown and DJ Whiz, the team visited nine library branches across the metro area, introducing young people—and a few curious adults—to the fundamentals of scratching and DJ culture.

The workshops welcomed kids as young as six and teens up to eighteen, with many parents and library staff joining in on the fun. Whether attendees were brand new to DJing or had tried it before, the sessions created space for everyone to explore the art form hands-on.

Each class focused on foundational scratch techniques like the baby scratch, scribble, drags, and stabs. The instructors kept things flexible, switching up the tempo to help students get as much repetition and feel as possible. In one session, the group even advanced into transformer scratches—a sign of how quickly some picked it up.

DJ Chris Brown and DJ Whiz also made sure to ground the experience in history. They shared footage of pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and DJ Kool Herc, and brought in traditional turntables and mixers to show how DJing started before transitioning to the modern Pioneer Rev 7 controllers.

The series wasn’t about creating professional DJs overnight. It was about access. About giving young people the chance to see what’s possible with two hands, a little rhythm, and the right tools. And based on the engagement, excitement, and focus in each room—it clicked.

Spin Society DJs is already in talks with the library system to bring back similar programming in the near future. For the team, this kind of community connection is just as important as rocking a packed dance floor.

As DJ Chris Brown put it, “We appreciated the opportunity to share our art with so many young people. Seeing them connect with the culture, the gear, and each other was powerful. We’re just getting started.”
